The plan went off without incident, and a few hours later, Nick boarded the helicopter, leaving Devon and Talia behind to begin integrating the business.

Meredith could tell from the look in Nick’s eyes that he was not happy with the arrangement, but he put up no fight and exited the estate without protest.

Meredith excused herself to her room. The door closed, and her shoulders became heavy as the barriers around her mind fell. Sitting on the bed, she closed her eyes in an attempt to stay focused.

Forty-eight hours...

She remembered walking into the main room after examining the children’s living quarters. They were disgusting, and she cringed thinking of any child having to sleep in those rooms. Especially when she was sitting in the lap of luxury across the building.

Meredith stood from the bed, moving into the bathroom. She began peeling off her clothes when a stabbing pain shot through her back and chest. Remembering the wound on her shoulder, she slowed as she removed the shirt covering it. She’d bled through onto the shirt, and then the blood had dried. She tugged, ripping away the scab crusting over the wound. Meredith stood with her back to the mirror, craning her neck to look over the wound and sighed; it looked like shit. Turning on the shower, she pulled out a toothbrush and started brushing her teeth.

Nick’s eyes had tipped her off. She’d always been able to read him through his eyes. When she walked in, they were squinted and shifting. He was struggling to deal with the reality before him. His hands were in his pockets and his chest rose and fell heavily. Devon was talking to him, but she knew he hadn’t heard a word. She’d needed to do something to pull him back to the present and out of his rage, so she’d held her breath and let the dizziness wash over her.

She hadn’t completely blacked out, although it’d been close. Devon and Lloyd had helped her to her feet, and Devon had suggested the fresh air. Her little stunt had worked, and now she needed to decide what to do next. The plan was logical; they needed to get word back home, and she needed to get Nick as far away from the situation as possible. She didn’t blame him. It made him good at his job, and it reminded him of his own humanity.

Steam had filled the room, so Meredith rinsed her mouth, put down her toothbrush, and stepped into the shower—the one place she could let down her guard completely. She could hide within the steam and breathe deeply, wash away all the scum, self-loathing, and denial she was holding inside. It helped. It didn’t make it go away, but it helped.

She thought of the little girl she’d examined, and a wave of guilt choked her. Why had it been so easy for her to treat the child like a piece of merchandise? Why hadn’t she been enraged like Nick? Was it because she hadn’t had any children of her own yet?

Yet.
